Minimum requirements on climate
The target is to reduce global carbon emissions by 45% by 2030 and reach net-zero by 2050
There is only one way to achieve that in the timescale required:
- Complete the transition to fossil free energy supply by closing all remaining coal and gas-fired power stations and replacing them with on-shore and off-shore wind farms, solar PV farms and hydro-electricity OVER THE NEXT 10 YEARS.
- Transition all UK car manufacturing from petrol and diesel to battery electric vehicles (BEV) and ban the sale of petrol and diesel vehicles WITHIN THE NEXT 10 YEARS.
- Require all new residential and commercial buildings to be heated with electric heat pump technology IMMEDIATELY and begin the process of converting all existing buildings from gas to electricity for heating and cooking - which must be accomplished by 2050.
- Phase out all HFC refrigerants, as per the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, but negotiate a much faster timetable to eliminate all HFCs by 2030 instead of only 80% by 2045.
- Plant 100 million trees per year, to reach a target of 1 billion trees by 2030 and 3 billion by 2050. This would nearly double the current forest cover of the UK and double the amount of carbon sequestered out of the atmosphere.
- Re-negotiate the Paris Climate Agreement to achieve stronger, binding targets that will keep the earth to 1.5 C of warming instead of 2 C.
